November 16 – December 15, 2012

Reception:  Friday, November 16, 7-10 pm

Whitdel Arts is proud to present past and current work of Detroit painter J Oscar in the [WA] emergence gallery.  Please join us for a reception for the artist on Friday, November 16, 7-10pm.

Artist statement from J Oscar:

“I’ve always had an interest in the arts.  When looking for a place to station my work out of, I didn’t think twice to choose Detroit. My mother was born and raised here; in the 1950’s, my father moved to Detroit and worked his way to owning a tire and furniture store.   Growing up I would assemble furniture and help at the tire store almost everyday.  From a small age, I began to fall in love with the city and its magnetic nature for ingenuity.

“Creating starts as a matter of color and form. First, I find colors that catch my eye, then I approach a canvas without an idea of how the piece will turn out. Starting with lines I create objects that I compose with color to create direction, depth, and texture.  From there I begin to create subjects, emotions, and meaning.

“Most of my materials are those that can be layered in the shortest amount of time so I can paint without waiting. This includes inks, acrylics, aerosol, and oil pastel. I began painting in a collective that would perform a live freestyle vocals and instrumental.  Sometimes I like to produce songs using multiple instrument loops, but I never excelled at violin or saxophone. Everything I do can be inspired by sound, though.  Music has stuck with me as a source of meditation and inspiration.

“As I look back at what I create, my goal has always been the same: to spill out work and advance.  My work is constantly changing, taking techniques and learning new ways to work.”
