History

From 2007-2016 Whitdel Arts was located in Southwest Detroit’s Hubbard Farms neighborhood in the basement level of the historic Whitdel building residential complex. It shared the basement level with Ladybug Studios, which were both divisions of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. Ladybug Studios is a co-op ceramics studio with a focus on youth that still operates out of the Whitdel Building.

In 2016 Whitdel Arts left its location in Southwest Detroit for new adventures after becoming its own non-profit corporation in January 2015.

From 2018-2019 Whitdel Arts was located in the Island View neighborhood, inside the Albert Kahn-designed building at 1111 Bellevue Street operated by Letts Industries, Inc. The gallery space with its high-ceilings and champagne columns was desirable and  attracted the attention of other tenants with deeper pockets than this plucky non-profit arts organization.

In 2020 Whitdel Arts is on the lookout for another space or opportunity to organize exhibitions. If you have leads or ideas, please drop us a line!
