2011 Actual Size Biennial

Opening Reception:  September 10, 6 pm-10 pm

Art Detroit Now Reception:  September 30, 6pm-9pm

DETROIT (Aug. 10, 2011) – More than 100 local and national based visual artists will show works in all mediums in the 2011 Actual Size Biennial.

“This is an important exhibition that always seems to serve as a sort of CliffsNotes of Detroit's art scene,” said Aaron Timlin who invited each artist individually to create one work in any medium, 2-D or 3-D, with the only stipulation being that at least two dimensions are 4 ¼” x 5 ½”.

Uniting three generations of artists, the Actual Size Biennial began with the detroit contemporary in 1999 under Timlin’s curatorial direction.  Timlin curates the current biennial under the auspice of Whitdel Arts, a division of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit.

Participating artists include local, national and a few international based emerging and established artists who, over the last 5 decades, have each had an impact on the Detroit art scene in one way or another.  A full list is below.

The Gallery

The multi-media exhibition that includes, sculpture, painting, photo, video, assemblage and more will take place at Whitdel Arts.  Created in 2010, Whitdel Arts is a new division of the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) located in the lower level of the historic Whitdel apartment building in southwest Detroit.  The new gallery provides exhibition space and a computer lab that together foster an inviting and creative environment for local area artists. Contributing to the bright and airy space, are the minimalist gloss-white walls and ceilings and exposed concrete floors which help to focus attention towards the revolving exhibitions in the 1800 sq ft gallery space.  The address is 1250 Hubbard Street, Detroit MI  48209 with the entrance to the gallery on Porter Street.  The opening reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The opening reception on September 10 from 6pm to 10pm provides visitors with an opportunity to meet the artists and curator.  Whitdel Arts is located online at www.whitdelarts.com.
