Julia Maiuri: Running on the Beach
at Corktown Studios
Reception: Friday April 15th 6-9pm
On top of the hill, oil on paper, 2015
Whitdel Arts is proud to present Running on the Beach, work by Julia Maiuri, at Corktown Studios. Please join us for an opening reception for the artist on Friday April 15th 6-9pm
Maiuri received her BFA from Wayne State University where her work was representative, tight and detailed. Her detailed human surfaces were enlarged and at times would lose context and become abstract. For Running on the Beach, Maiuri takes abstraction in a new direction to create for us a, “world in which intimacies are exposed, but scrambled in translation.”
With a shift in her painting technique, the figure is now created with loose gesturing strokes. The beauty of the paint is striking then leaves you questioning the character and their surroundings. Delving into the recesses of human nature, Maiuri uses imagery from nudist magazines, erotica, and various related subcultures to present us images we can neither embrace or deny. It’s a definite theme in the work, Maiuri depicts, “moments that oscillate between opposing states: seduction and repulsion, indulgence and restraint, day and night.” A darker, rawer addition to her earlier works that is relentlessly captivating.
The reception will be April 15th, 2016. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, e-mail Rachel at Rachel@Whitdelarts.com.
